Enkhuizen and Surroundings
Enkhuizen is a city and municipality in the West Friesland region, in the Dutch province of North Holland. The municipality borders both the Markermeer and the IJsselmeer. It has 18,383 inhabitants and covers an area of 116.04 km² (of which 103.62 km² is water). Besides the city of Enkhuizen, the municipality also includes the village of Oosterdijk and the hamlet of Westeinde.
Enkhuizen is known as the “Herring City” due to its history as a center for herring fishing. Today, it is a popular tourist destination, especially for water sports, and features attractions such as marinas, Sprookjeswonderland (Fairy Tale Wonderland), and the Zuiderzee Museum. The city is also home to internationally renowned seed companies, horticulture, and a plastics industry cluster. The local dialect, Enkhuizens, a variant of West Frisian, is still spoken.
